Single VS Double Storey Homes in Australia

Categories: Australia Guest Post

Are you thinking about getting a new home? Chances are high that you’re in the market for a new place that you can call home, as many are these days. Researching every aspect of the home purchasing process is a good thing, but what about the houses themselves? For example, you will come across many single storey homes, as well as many double storey homes. Knowing the advantages and disadvantages of a single storey home as they relate to a double storey home is going to be important.

Let’s go over a few of these advantages and disadvantages right now.
One of the top advantages to getting a double storey home is that there is a natural sense of partitioning. Your family can be either upstairs or downstairs. You may feel that this setup gives everyone a greater sense of freedom compared to living in a single storey home.
On the other hand, you might want to consider single storey homes over double storey homes because there are no stairs. We tend to buy houses for the long run, and a house with a flight of stairs connecting the two storeys might make it difficult to actually get upstairs if you were to suddenly have a hard time climbing the stairs. Walking up and down stairs constantly tends to tear up the joints and make for a painful experience. If you had a single storey house, then everything is on ground level.
Putting furniture into a double storey home can also be a challenge, since half the home will be up the stairs. If you have a very narrow set of stairs, then it will be difficult to actually get the furniture up the stairs. You may have to make compromises in this regard. That can make you change your decorating plans and possibly have to widen your budget in order to get furniture that can indeed accommodate the space better.
If you have small children that will be growing up in the house, you have to be aware that the stairs in a double storey home are going to be a safety hazard. They don’t have to be of course – they make guard gates to keep children from getting to the stairs and possibly falling down them. Yet this is indeed something that you will need to consider while you’re looking through your options.
Overall, there are many things that you have to look at when it comes to figuring out whether or not a single storey home or a double storey home is going to be the best purchase for your needs. You have to think about the future property values of not just your home, but the neighbourhood where the home is going to be located. If you are in an older community that senior citizens tend to prefer, then a double storey home may not sell as quickly. However, if you are in an emerging neighbourhood where a lot of young couples are relocating, they might find your double storey home more desirable. Weigh your options and make the choice that’s right for you!
